This morning I got an e-mail from Antarctica! My former boss, Tom Davenport, is there now. I've been tracking his progress on his blog, which he has maintained throughout the expedition.
Tom is like a frozen Lance Armstrong. He had a frightening diagnosis of colon cancer, but made a full recovery. He had always wanted to go on an expedition to the South Pole, and this brush with death gave him the incentive to turn from bureaucrat to arctic explorer. I really admire what he is doing.
There really is a pole down there!
His blog is called "From End 2 End: From Colon Cancer to the South Pole" and is meant to raise awareness – and funding – to fight colon cancer. It makes amazing reading. It took 53 days to get to the South Pole, and they use kites to haul supplies across the continent. I don't know how he does it, maybe it's because he's Canadian.
I've been bitching about the cold in Mongolia in many of my posts. Maybe I should just shut up!
