Happy Birthday, Gramps

I was reading about the famous end-of-war kiss in the New York Times, when I remembered that this was my late grandfather's birthday. He was on home leave at the time, after four years of war in the Pacific.

The news meant that he didn't have to go back. He always told me this story with a big grin on his face, remembering how happy he felt when the war was over, and what an incredible gift it was that the end of the war fell on his birthday.
