Many Are Cold, but Few Are Frozen

Tropical Ukraine

Indonesia green, with a Mongolia-blue sky

When I lived in Indonesia, I dreaded visiting Ukraine. It seemed so bleak and cold. I hated the snow, and for months at a time, the trees were skeletal. And the sky was almost always a solid, heavy grey.

But after two years in Mongolia, Ukraine seems tropical. The trees burst with greenness, and plants grow out of everything that can hold a drop of water. Sometimes there is even a Mongolia-blue sky.

It won't stay like this forever, but there will still be leaves on the trees months after Mongolia is frozen again.
